Carriers and actors of the project:
After being developed by Luis Von Ahn and Severin
Hacker and their group of collaborators, Duolingo is now based in four
offices around the world, with a lot of different profiles (Education,
Marketing, Design…). It is a true company which is self-sufficient.
Research question:
How can we help other people develop new skills quickly and efficiently in a continuously changing world, when they do not necessarily have access to people around them who know these competencies and who would be able to help them?
The reason you selected this project:
I chose Duolingo because I think it has perfectly its place in the center of today's language. Our world has already become multicultural, and it is not over. This website is a perfect way for everybody to try to learn a new language, and to make it more easy for them to travel, communicate with friends, family, or with associates. I believe that we have a lot to discover and to learn from other cultures, and that this sharing can be beautiful, that is why we have to give ourselves the tools to achieve it. It is a skill which can be personnally fulfilling, but which is also remarded in the workplace, and it will be needed more and more in the future.

Name: Emily

Family status: Older daughter, has 2 brothers and 1 sister
Income: Her parents provide for her apartment and a part of her food but she also works in order to make 200€/a month
List of hobbies and passions: Emily loves music (plays guitar since she was 10), loves to read and to hike. Her friends and family are very important to her.
Dreams: One of her dreams is to travel the world.
Problems and frustration: life is not always easy for her. Since she is a student and comes from a big family, money can be a problem for her, but she does not want to worry her parents so she works.
Major issue related to the subject: Emily has to leave England for an intership in 3 months, which will take place in Italy. She is really happy because it will be her first time leaving England, but she does not know a word of Italian, and even though most people know how to speak English nowadays, she is afraid she might have a hard time making friends.
